Day 2
September 25th, 2024
14.00 - 15.15 GMT+7 / 09.00 - 10.15 GMT+2

Land subsidence in the northern coastal area of Java presents a significant challenge, affecting both the environment and the socio-economic fabric of the region. The collaboration between Dutch and Indonesian experts has been pivotal in further exploring and understanding the multi-disciplinary aspect of this issue. The focus area of the study was PANTURA (the north coast of Java) with a special case focus on Pekalongan, Semarang and Demak.

This seminar session will explore the multifaceted approach taken by the researchers from Deltares and BRIN, which includes scientific analysis to understand the mechanisms driving land subsidence and its broader implications. The studies focused on a scientific analysis to understand the mechanism of the problem, its further impact on socio-economic and governance aspects, and how the stakeholders can respond to the problem. The scientific component is crucial, as it lays the foundation for all subsequent actions and provides a further basis for decision making on local, regional and national level. On the socio-economic front, the seminar will discuss how land subsidence disrupts communities, agriculture, and infrastructure; its not just about the loss of land; its about the displacement of people, the loss of crops, and the damage to homes and roads. As governance plays a critical role in coordinating the response to land subsidence, we will also discuss the policies and frameworks that have been established to manage this issue. By bringing together experts from various fields, the session could foster a comprehensive dialogue on how to sustainably manage land subsidence in North Coastal Java and beyond.
