The Week of Indonesia-Netherlands Education and Research (WINNER) is an initiative by the Dutch Embassy in Jakarta, Nuffic Neso, the Indonesian Academy of Young Scientists (ALMI), the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), the Netherlands Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), and the Dutch Research Council (NWO).

Indonesia and The Netherlands share a long history of collaboration in research and education. The aim of WINNER is to celebrate, strengthen and expand these collaborations. WINNER is a yearly recurring event, where researchers, policy makers and societal stakeholders from Indonesia and the Netherlands are invited to present results from research, discuss how to strengthen the collaboration in research and education, identify mutual priorities, share best practices, and make new connections.

The kick-off event of WINNER took place online from 24-26 November 2020. The theme for the first edition of WINNER was “Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals – from knowledge to practice”. The event was opened by Bambang Brodjonegoro, Indonesian Minister of Research and Technology / Head of the Coordinating National Agency for Research and Innovation (Kemristek/BRIN) and Ingrid van Engelshoven, Dutch Minister for Education and Culture. The closing talk show featured an interview with Nadiem Makarim, Indonesian Minister for Education and Culture. The Program of WINNER 2020  contained a great number of sessions on: Health, Biodiversity, Renewable Energy, Water, Culture and Justice, Decent work and Economic Growth, Education, Partnerships and Climate Change.

The Netherlands hosted the Climate Adaptation Summit from 24-26 January 2021 (CAS 2021) Indonesia was an active participant in the Summit, including a speech by President Jokowi. The Summit set out an ambitious ‘Adaptation Action Agenda’, to support the process of adjusting to current or expected climate change and its effects.

The first WINNER contained a number of sessions related to Climate Change and adaptation. To further strengthen the dialogue among researchers and policy makers and to contribute to creating awareness among the private sector and the public in support of the implementation of the Adaptation Action Agenda in Indonesia, WINNER is organizing an event to follow-up on CAS2021 in Indonesia. The event will take place on 10 March 2021.
