This session is your chance to delve into how peer-to-peer cooperation between the Probation services, the Center for International Legal Cooperation (CILC), and Saxion enriches a legal system that serves both Indonesian citizens and foreigners. Hear stories about changes that will be in place when Indonesia host in 2026 the prestigious World Congress on Probation and Parole.
From Colonial Roots to Contemporary Challenges
In late 2022, Indonesia took a significant step by replacing its 1918 Dutch colonial-era Criminal Code with a new one, aiming to democratize and decolonize its legal framework. While this change was celebrated for advancing issues and more democratic reform like criminal settlements and alternative sanctions, it also sparked a strong need for action. Namely, the Law dictates that certain reforms need to be in place by January 2026.
Addressing Overcrowded Prisons: Safer communities and Sustainable Development
Overcrowded prisons present a critical issue for Indonesia’s justice system. As societal views shift, finding alternatives to imprisonment is essential.
