Day 2
October 8th, 2025
09.00-10.15 GMT+2 / 14.00 – 15.15 GMT+7

Introduction: In this seminar, we want to discuss how internationalization efforts in both Indonesia and the Netherlands face severe challenges due to shifting political changes, protectionist approaches, funding decline, and future uncertainties.  We realise that the challenges have been increasing and it has left  many academics and students behind. Therefore, we need  alternative solutions that are more sustainable and able to become an equalising force in international educatoin. However, certain educational practices can thrive without requiring heavy investments while reaching more students. We will discuss several statements with the audience and explore viable initiatives, highlighting Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) as a key opportunity.

Part One: We’ll provide backgrounds on educational and internationalization trends in both countries to set the scene, leading to a discussion statement:

  • “We should stop relying on external parties and take responsibility as educators to improve the curriculum.”

Part Two: We’ll introduce human-centered sustainability in a social sciences context, emphasizing the people aspect of sustainability and its importance in developing lecturers and students. The corresponding statement is:

  • “Sustainability should stop being about green and blue, but more about people and relations.”

Part Three will focus on Transformative Competencies. The audience will explore this concept based on the OECD’s Learning Compass (https://www.oecd.org/education/2030-project/teaching-and-learning/learning/) and share potential applications in their own practices. A digital handout will be provided to support this discussion.

Part Four: Building on these transformative competencies, we’ll introduce Collaborative Online International Learning as a practical implementation method. We’ll showcase three COIL practices between Indonesia and the Netherlands that demonstrate these competencies in action and share key lessons learned. We’ll then ask:

  • “What objections could you think of for implementing COIL in our institution?”

Conclusion: The session will conclude by addressing and challenging these objections
