
BIOGRAPHY
Born on September 21 1970 in Pemalang, Central Java, Abdul Haris is a Professor at the
Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at the University of Indonesia (UI).
His educational background begins with his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the
Physics Department, at FMIPA UI. He then continued his doctoral studies in Geophysics
at Kiel University, Germany.
As an academic, Abdul Haris has quite a brilliant career history in higher education. In
2008–2013, he served as Secretary of FMIPA UI. Furthermore, in 2014–2018, he served
as Dean of FMIPA UI. He continued his position as Dean of FMIPA UI in 2018–2019 for
a second period until finally being elected as Vice Rector for Research and Innovation at
the University of Indonesia in 2019–2020. Most recently, in 2020–2024 he served as Vice
Rector for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Indonesia before finally being
appointed as Director General of Higher Education, Research and Technology on March
15, 2024.
Apart from that, outside campus, Abdul Haris is also actively involved and serves as Vice
President of the Indonesian Geophysicists Association. In 2019, he also became Chair
and Founder of the Independent Accreditation Institute for Natural Sciences and Formal
Sciences (LAMSAMA).
Some of the achievements and awards he has received include the Satyalancana Karya
Satya X Badge of Honor, Honorable Mention Asia Pacific Region Imperial Barrel Award
2017, Outstanding Performance Award from the Minister of Education, Culture,
Research, and Technology, and the Best Researcher Award in Indonesia according to
SINTA.
