BIOGRAPHY

Farman Purnama is an Indonesian tenor born in Jakarta. His profession as a singer initiated in 1993 when he won the first prize in a national competition for classical singing of teenager category called Bintang Radio dan Televisi Remaja.
In early days he was trained vocally by N. Simanungkalit, Pranadjaja, Annett Frambach and Avip Priatna, but later he took formal education in Architecture at Bandung Institute of Technology ( ITB ) instead and graduated in year 2002. Only 7 years later finally he decided to study classical vocal performing art at the Utrecht Conservatory the Netherlands, under direction of maestra Henny Diemer. He has achieved his master degree in classical vocal performing art in 2015. During his 6 years study in the Netherlands Farman also participated in numerous masterclasses hosted by world renowned tutors such as Margreet Honig, Rudolf Jansen, Christa Pfeiler, Ed Spanjaard, Nelly Miricioiu, William Mateuzzi, Roberta Alexander, Alexander Oliver, Raymond Modesti and many more.

Back to 1999 he has often appeared as a concert soloist for Batavia Madrigal Singers and Jakarta Concert Orchestra under direction of Mr. Avip Priatna. Collaborated with the Orchestra, he had performed in 4 opera productions; as Aeneas in “Dido and Aeneas” in (2004), as Turiddu in “Cavalleria Rusticana” by Pietro Mascagni (2005), as Samson in “Samson et Dalila” by Camille Saint-Saëns (2006) and as Jose in “Carmen” by Bizet (2016).
Also accompanied by the same orchestra, in 2013 he played the main character, Sangkuriang, in the musical drama “Sang Kuriang”, by Dian HP and libretto by Utuy Tatang Sontani.
He intensely collaborate with the Jakarta Concert Orchestra until present time.

In 2018 he played the main male character, Habibie (the 3rd president of the Republic of Indonesia), in an Indonesian newly made opera wich was composed by Purwatjaraka, entitled “Opera Ainun”.

His debut on international opera production was when he acted as Ferrando in Mozart’s “Cosi Fan Tutte” for the production of Dutch National Opera Academy with Residentie Orchestra Netherlands (2014).

Accompanied by Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa from Japan, in October 2006 he was appointed as the tenor soloist for “Coronation Mass” by Mozart in Macau International Music Festival in Macau. June 2007 he performed the solo part of Carl Maria Von Weber’s “Mass in e flat major” in Kanazawa Japan which was recorded and published by Warner Classic Japan.

Farman has actively performed and collaborated with Indonesian notable classical musicians such as Christopher Abimanyu, Binu D. Soekaman, Aning Katamsi, Iswargia Renardi Sudarno, Ananda Sukarlan, Adelaide Simbolon and many more.

He is also attracted to pop music and had maintained favorable collaborations with the late Elfa Secioria. Until today he nurtures a good collaborative relationship with Andi Rianto (Magenta Orchestra), Adie MS (Twilight Orchestra) and also Purwatjaraka. He sang in 2 popular music album CDs titled “Interlude dari Hati” and “Karena Cinta Kita Ada”.

On April 30th, 2017, right on his birthday, he released his solo album entitled “Farman”. He sings the songs in this album which are all his compositions.

In 2023, Farman celebrated the 30 years of his profession as a singer by releasing a digital album containing 17 Indonesian art songs
