BIOGRAPHY

Bente Bergmans (she/her) is policy secretary at Wereldmuseum, part of the National Museum of World Cultures Foundation. Wereldmuseum manages collections whose original owners lost possession involuntarily at the time, objects that were obtained with the permission of the then owner or whose provenance history is (still) unclear. The vast majority of colonial collections come from Indonesia. Wereldmuseum also manages collections from Suriname, Aruba, CuraƧao, Sint Maarten, the Dutch Caribbean and other former Dutch colonial territories, including objects from Sri Lanka. Bergmans was since the start of its partnership involved as secretary at the Cultural Heritage Agency for the Colonial Collections Consortium. This consortium supports the accessibility of and provenance research into collections from a colonial context. Bergmans has a background in Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology.
