Supporting Hospitals in Indonesia to Tackle Antimicrobial Resistance with the Drive-AMS program

The Drive-AMS program is a collaborative initiative that supports healthcare professionals and policymakers in low- and middle-income countries to develop and implement Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASPs). It was developed in 2019 at Radboud university medical center (Radboudumc) in the Netherlands. Its overarching goal is to build sustainable, long-term capacity for antimicrobial stewardship in human health, guided by a One Health perspective to ensure broad applicability. Launched in Indonesia in 2024, Drive-AMS addresses the urgent challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR); a growing threat to patient safety and the resilience of healthcare systems worldwide.

The Drive-AMS program combines an implementation masterclass with 18-months expert support, bringing together teams from hospitals across Indonesia. Each hospital team is composed of professionals from different specialties, creating a multidisciplinary approach to tackling AMR. Participants develop and implement their own ASP projects in their hospitals, while receiving guidance through masterclasses, webinars, and expert mentoring.

In 2024 and early 2025, an in-person masterclass and follow-up online sessions were successfully delivered. The next phase of the project, running through 2025 and 2026, will focus on evaluating the Drive-AMS program and gathering lessons learned to strengthen future implementation. This evaluation will use four methods, interviews, focus group discussions, observations, and document analysis, to capture both experiences and outcomes of AMS interventions in the participating hospitals. By combining these approaches, the evaluation aims to build evidence on what works, identify barriers and enablers, and inform the sustainable scale-up of Drive-AMS.

The Drive-AMS team will also host a session during WINNER 2025, where participants and experts will share insights from the program and discuss its role in strengthening Indonesiaโ€™s healthcare system.
