Strengthening Sustainable Waste Management Systems in a Traditional Village in Kunir Village, Kediri through Sustainable Innovation
Kunir Village, Pagu District, Kediri Regency is part of an area with potential for cultural and historical tourism, particularly related to the Kediri Kingdom. Kunir Village is located near the former center of the Kediri Kingdom. There is a historic site called the Totok Kerot Statue or Dwarapala, a relic of the Kediri Kingdom in Kunir Village. However, Kunir Village has challenges in waste management. Limited infrastructure and increasing tourism activity raise concerns about waste accumulation and environmental degradation. Currently, local people manage waste by burning it.
Meanwhile, it has serious impacts on health, especially plastic waste. Municipal solid waste management is closely related to the concept of a circular economy, where waste is turned into useful products. Solid waste generation measurement and socialization of biodegradable waste composting and plastic waste recycle will be carried out in Kunir Village. However, low public awareness and limited supporting facilities for sustainable waste management are still challenges. This project is also one of the contributions from Indonesia’s community and academics in following up on the direction of Indonesian Minister of Environment to realize Zero Waste Zero Emission by 2030.
This project aims to initiate a community development on the municipal solid waste management in Kunir Village. This project include several strategic steps, namely: knowledge transfer, technical training, and provision of facilities for recycling municipal solid waste into goods with sales value. The expected outcomes of this project are increasing community involvement and ability in municipal solid waste management, producing recycled products with sales value, and building material recovery facilities in Kunir Village.
