Day 2
October 19th, 2022
15.15 – 16.30 GMT+7 / 10.15-11.30 GMT+2

Description:

In this interactive session we will delve deeper in how IIIF can help students and researchers in gaining access to digitized collections that are kept in different locations. IIIF stands for International Image Interoperability Framework and has been developed by a consortium of universities, libraries, museums and archives. Leiden University is one of the founding members of this consortium. Through IIIF images of digitized collections can be interconnected, complemented and annotated.

The benefits of using IIIF are multiple: it cates for fast, rich, zoom and pan delivery of images; manipulation of size, scale, region of interest, rotation, quality and format; users can comment on, transcribe, and draw on image-based resources; users can compare pages, build an exhibit, or view a virtual collection of items served from different sites.

IIIF plays an important role in connecting GLAM collections (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) and provides new possibilities for researchers and students to unlock sources and information, such as Indonesia heritage collections that are kept in or outside Indonesia. How does IIIF work? How can it be used as a researcher and student? In this session we will delve deeper into how GLAM collections can open up their digital heritage and provide successful examples by researchers and lecturers of the added benefit of using IIIF.
