Day 3
October 12th, 2023
14:30-15:15 GMT+7 / 09:30-10:15 GMT+2

Social enterprises apply commercial strategies to address societal problems to move towards more responsible production and consumption. However, while their core goal is to scale their social impact to repurpose management for the public good, scaling these enterprises and their impact is very hard. Scholars have identified two scaling paths that are focused on either growing the organization (direct scaling) or moving beyond one’s own organizational boundaries to encourage and help other organizations to change (indirect scaling).

To help understand how social enterprises can motivate stakeholders towards positive change, thus scaling their indirect impact, this workshop first gives an overview of key findings from research. Drawing on, amongst others, a historical, exploratory account of Tony’s Chocolonely, a fast-growing social enterprise whose mission is to abolish child slavery in the cocoa industry, we unpack these scaling strategies. We discuss these insights vis-à-vis local knowledge and insights from different social ventures in Indonesia, for instance from Semarang, Surabaya and Papua.

Next, this workshop draws on the participant’s experiences, and aims to leverage these experience to further enrich everyone’s understanding of scaling social enterprises through, among others research and education, in both  Indonesia and the Netherlands for increasing regional impact.

Session format:

  1. General introduction with overview of research findings on scaling for impact from both The Netherlands and Indonesia (30 mins): prof.dr.ir. Elco van Burg (10 min), prof.dr. Ary Mollet (5 min), prof.dr. Hady Hadiyanto (5 min), dr. Aun Faletehan
